KK worked for eight months as marketing executive in the hotel industry. After few years, in 1994, he moved to Mumbai in search for his career.

In 1994, he gave his demo tape to Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot and Leslie Lewis to get a break in the music arena. Finally, he got a call from Leslie Lewis to sing a one-minute jingle for UTV for Santogen Suiting ad which kick started his career. He considers Leslie Lewis as his mentor for giving him his first jingle to sing in Mumbai. In a span of four years, he has sung more than 3,500 jingles in 11 Indian languages.

His dream to sing for a Bollywood movie materialized when Vishal Bharadwaj asked him to sing "Chod Aaye Hum" in Gulzar's Maachis (1996). KK was introduced as a playback singer with A.R. Rahman's hit song "College Styley" and "Hello Dr." from Kadir's Kadhal Desam and then "Strawberry Kannae" from AVM Productions's musical film Minsara Kanavu (1997).

He appeared in "Josh of India" song for the support of Indian Cricket Team during Cricket World Cup 1999.

Then, the debut album of KK “PAL”, arranged, composed and produced by Leslie Lewis of Colonial Cousins, released in 1999 from Sony Music. The lyrics was written by Mehboob. All the tracks have been sung by KK. After its release, it was an instant hit, and brought a lot of recognition to KK. The songs - "Aap Ki Dua" and "Pal" in no time ruled the lips of the youngsters and KK's quick march to celebrity-hood commenced. “PAL” is the album for which KK got the prestigious Screen award as best singer.

But what catapulted him into the big league was the wildly popular "Tadap Tadap Ke" in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999).

On 22 January 2008, KK released his second album Humsafar after a gap of eight years. The songs "Aasmaan Ke", "Yeh Kahan Mil Gaye Hum" and "Rain Bhai [Maajhi]" are famous songs from this album, besides, KK had also sung an English Rock Ballad "Cineraria". The title track, "Humsafar" is a mix of English and Hindi lyrics.
