THE ENTERTAINER.......USHA UTHUP

Usha Iyer, later Usha Uthup, born in 1947 in Mumbai in a Tamil Brahmin Family. His father was a Policeman who rose to become Deputy Commissioner Of Police, Mumbai. Her moher was well  educated housewife. Her older sisters, Indira and Uma, were the famous singing Sami sisters. Her father-in-law Brigadier C.C. Uthup, of the Sikh Regiment, received the prestigious A.V.S.M. Award from the President V.V. Giri in 1973. She studied at St. Agnes High School (Clare Road, Byculla). In school life she thrown out of music class because she did not fit in with a voice like others. But her music teacher recognised that she had some music in her. Even though she was not formally trained in music, she grew up in an musical atmosphere. Her parents used to listen to a wide range of Western Classical, Hindusthani and Carnatic Classical, she used to join them.

Her neighbour was S.M.A. Pathan, the then Deputy Commissioner Of Police. His daughter, Jamila, influenced her to learn Hindi and take up Indian Classical Music. This Fusion approach helped her to pioneer her unique brand of Indian Pop in the 1970s.

At the age of nine her first public singing occurred. Her sisters who were already exploring music career, took her to the most popular radio anchor Ameen Sayani, who gave her an opportunity to sing on the Ovaltine Music Hour in Radio Ceylon. She sang a number called “Mockinbird Hill”. After that several appearances followed through her teenage years.

Usha Uthup started singing in a small night club in Chennai called Nine Gems, wearing a saree and leg callipers, when she was 20. Her performance was so well that the owner of that night club asked her to stay for a week.  After that she began singing in Kolkata at night club such as “Trincas”. In the same time she also sang at “Talk of the Town”, now known as “Not Just Jazz by the Bay” in Mumbai. After Trincas, she atarted singing at the Oberoi Hotel, Delhi. One day, a film crew belonging to Navketan unit, including Shashi Kapoor, visited the night club and they offered hera chance to sung in film. As a result, she started her Bollywood career with HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA. She was supposed to sing Dum Maro Dum along with Asha Bhosle, but for for internal politicking, she lost that chance but ended up singing an English version.

In 1968, she recorded covers of two pop songs in English, “Jambalaya” and  The Kingston Trio’s “ Greenback Dollar”. She also spend time some time in London where she frequently visited to Vernon Corea’s BBC office and was interviewed on London Sounds Eastern on BBC Radio London. Then she visited Nairobi as part of an Indian festival. She was so popular that she was invited to stay on. Her natianalistic songs in Swahili made her extremely popular and the then President Jomo Kenyatta made her an Honorary Citizen of Keniya.

Usha Uthup sang several songs in the 1970s & 1980s for music directors R.D. Burman and Bappi Lahiri. She also reprised some of R.D. Burman’s songs that were sung by others such as Mehbooba Mehbooba and Dum Maro Dum and popularised them to a distinct end. She also sang in Chris Perry’s Konkani album Chris Perry Presents Usha : “Meu Amor”. She also sang for a two-volume collection of Children Rhymes “Karadi Rhymes”, which are “Indian Rhymes for Indian Kids”, brought out by Karadi Tales. With each rhyme set to an Indian Raga and sung in her characteristic voice with a feisty tempo, Usha Uthup creats the atmosphere for children, and surprisingly, even adults to sing along and dance to the toe-tapping beats. She appeared as a Judge on a singing reality show Bharat Ki Shaan : Singing Star – Season 2 (2012) on DD National Channel along with Ismail Darbar, she was the Judge in the Season 3 of the show as well. She appeared in disguise on Indian Idol 1 & 2, She was one of the co-judges of the 2007 & 2008 and Idea star Singer Season 5 (2010), the most rated South IndianMusical  Reality Show in Malayalam.

Usha Uthup is also an actress. She made a cameo appearance in the film Bombay To Goa in 1972. In 2006 she acted in the Malayalam film Pothan Vava. She appeared in Bow Barracks Forever derected by Anjun Dutta in 2007. In that year she again appeared in Hattrick music video as herself. She also acted in Vishal Bhardwaj’s film 7 Khoon Maaf in 2011, she also sang a song in this film. In 2012 she also starred in Kannada film Parie.

She married to Jani Chacko Uthup and was formerly married to Late Ramu Iyer. They have a daughter Anjali and a son Sunny.

She currently lives in Kolkata with her husband. She is considered as an Icon of modern Kolkata and is an active in social presence in the city life in the City Of Joy.

From 1966 she continuing her Magic throughout the World as she sung in the film in Revolver Rani in this year (2014) too.

It has been scheduled that Usha Uthup will perform in the “Dooars Utsav” In Alipurduar, West Bengal, India, on 4^th February, 2015. Thus she continuing her Musical Journey to entertain all of us.

THE YOUTH ICON OF BENGAL.........RUPAM ISLAM

Rupam Islam born in a family of Musicians on 25^th January, 1974 in Kolkata. His Fathar’s name is Late Nurul Islam and Mother Late Chhandita Islam. Rupam's musical journey started fairly under the tutelage of his parents, renowned musicians of their time. His parents was active member of a Choir Group named “Jhankaar Shilpi Gosthi” and Ruapm performed his first stage performance at the age of 4 (four) years with this Choir Group. Rupam became the Child Artist of “Akashvani” and  “ Doordarshan” at the age of 9 (nine) years. In 1986 he got “UTTAM KUMAR AWARD” for the “Best Child Artist”.

Education went hand-in-hand with Music, and he graduated from “Ashutosh College”, Kolkata in English Literature. Later also completed Bachelor’s In Education (B.ED.) and joined “Taki Boys Multipurpose School” where he taught English to primary school students for eleven years.

In 2006 he voluntarily retired from the profession of Teaching to establish his career in Music Only. He was very much influenced bythe music of Michael Jackson, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Gautam Chattopadhyay (Founder of Mohiner Ghoraguli) and James (Rock Singer from Bangladesh). He also started learning Classical Music.

Rupam’s first solo album “Tor Bhorsate” was released by HMV in 1998. The was re-released as “Neel Rong Chhilo Bhison Priyo” in 2003, and on popular demand was again re-released in CD format by “SaReGaMa” in 2007. Download & Listen one of the best song of this album from below :

Ami Tomar Chokher Kalo Chai

In 1998, Rupam formed the band “FOSSILS”. Their first stage show was held on 9^th January, 1999, at Nazrul Mancha for “Gaan 99” organised by HMV. This show had Deep on accoustic guiter, Sayantan Bumba on guiter, Tanmoy on bass, Rajiv on drums and Rupam as vocalist. This line-up was short lived and the very next show it was Chandra & Teno on guiters, Baji on drums, Bumpy on bass, Jatu on keyboard and Rupam as vocalist. Initial audience reaction to the band’s music was not encouraging. During their first few shows, they met with jeering and hostile objection to the Rock style and techniques they employed. Thus, the band name was meant to convey a sense of an “underground” movement that the members felt they had initiated and their belief that they woould be fossilised inti history under the pressure of social disapproval of their music, only to be excavated decades later by musicologists wishing to discover the roots pf Bangla Rock. The band would experience a flurry of line-up changes until the end of 1999, by which a sort of permanency was achieved with Rupam (vocal), Chandra (bass), Allen (guiter), Stephen (drums), Indra (keyboard) and Parikshit (manager) as the members. In spite of the hostile feedbacks, the band decided to stick to their sound and for the first time in the history of Indian Bangla Rock Sound.

In 2000, the band recorded a demo version of their tracks. They faced rejection several times from several record houses. Finally, a contract was landed with Asha Audio and by the end of the same year recording for the band’s first studio album began. The album was titled Fossils and released in 2002. It was not an instant success, but the music caught on once the FM radio stations started broadcasting the tracks. The album’s popularity has increased with time, and today it is called a CULT album. By this time, the band had created a niche audience and dedicated following among the youth.

The band’s second album, titled Fossils 2, was released in 2004. It was then noted as  the Bangla Band Album with the highest budget. The album was partly sponsored by the Thums Up brand. The mastering engineer was Steve Fallone of Sterling Sound, New York. This project rapidly increased the popularity of Fossills.

The band’s third album, titled Mission F, was released in 2006. It was a theme album for the first “Kolkata Police Friendship Cup Football Tournament”. A special track, “Aeka Nauo”, dedicated to “HIV Positive People”, was included in the album. It featured Usha Uthup and was produced in collaboration with the Kolkata Sukriti Foundation. Radio Mirchi collaborated with the band to produce two “Unplugged” versions of previously recorded tracks that were included in the album. According to a survey conducted by Radio Mirchi, Mission F was declared the Best Selling Album in Kolkata for the year 2006.

In the first half of 2007, Rupam launched a separate project named RnB with the bassist Bumpy.

In second half of 2007, Fossils released a music video album, titled Aupodartho. The album was launched in Music world, Park Street, Kolkata. The crowd turnout was so unexpected huge that fans had to be turned out and the outlet’s premises closed.

On 9^th November, Fossils performed live for the first time in Bangladesh at the “Dhaka Rock Fest 2007”, the first ever “International Bangla Rock Festival”.

In the end of 2008, Fossils began the recording of their 5^th album, titled Fossils 3, which was released on 19^th September, 2009. It was developed as a “Concept Album”. It endeavours to tell the story of a mysterious character known only as “Sada Jama (White Shirt)” through the interlinked audio tracks as well as a separate graphic account contained in the inlay cards. Mayookh Bhowmick on the distortion tabla, Indrajit Dey (Indra) on the keyboard, and a team from Kolkata Music Academy Chamber Orchestra led by Abraham Mazumder were the guest contributors to the album. Fossils 3 won the Anandalok Awards, 2009, in the non-film album category. Later in that year, Rupam won the “National Film Award” (Rajat Kamal) in the Best Male Playback Singer category from the Govrnment of India for his work in the film Mahanagar@Kolkata.

The 6^th album, titled Fossils 4, released on 19^th October, 2013. For the first time, the band has soft launched their album as full length online streaming to te audience, days before physical release of the album. It is also the first time the band holds both copyright & publishing rights of this album while INRECO doing the distribution & marketing. By its online release it was already a superhit.

In 2007, Rupam made his debut in Hindi playback in Vishesh film’s Jannat, where he sang the title song “Jannat Jahaan” and at the request of the producers, Rupam created a Bengali version of that song – “Jannat Takkai”. This version got screened as well in theatres. Another song he sang “Dil Kare” in the film All The Best : Fun Begins in 2009 under the banner of Ajay Devgan Films.

Rupam has done the maximum number of playback singing for films among all the Bangla Band Singers. Some of them are Piyalir Password, Chalo Lets Go, Madly Bangali, Kanchan Babu, Jiyo Kaka, Olotpalot, Shukno Lanka, Dwando, Angshumaner Chhobi, Aleya, Antim Swash Sundar, Mahanagar@Kolkata, Autograph, Baishese Srabon, Ichhe, Bedroom, Hemlock Society etc.

Combining his two loves : Music & Literature – Rupam wrote his first book of songs, Epitaph from AAhir Publication, one of the leading little magazine, which was released in 2006 and became one of the most sought-after books at the Kolkata Book Fair. Rupam On The Rocks, his second book, was released at the Kolkata Book Fair in 2009 and continues to remain one of the Ananda Publisher’s hottest seller. He also wrote a special column for the youth magazine Unish Kuri.

Rupam married his long-time friend Rupsha Dasgupta. On 12^th September, 2010, they became parents ofa baby boy, Rup Aarohan Prometheus.

With the music flavoured by a blend of Blues, Rock and Psychedelia, along with Rupam Islam’svocal renditions of his characteristic psychoanalytical lyrics, Fossils is identified as one of the best Band in India……And Rupam Islam is now highly established as Singer, Lyricist and Composer.

THE SWEETEST MALE VOICE EVER..........K.J. YESUDAS

Kattassery Joseph Yesudas was born on January 10th 1940 in Fort Kochi, the ancient port city of Kerala. His father Augustine Joseph was himself a well-known singer and stage actor who rode the Kerala stage like a colossus for over a quarter of a century. Eldest of the four sons and one daughter of the Joseph couple, Yesudas took to music at a very early age. His first Guru was his beloved father himself, who lovingly and painstakingly led little Yesudas through the basic precepts of Carnatic Music while he was hardly five years old.

From there, the budding singer took lessons under several musical wizards in and around Cochin and Chennai namely Kunjan Velu Aasan, P.X.Joseph, Sivaraman Nair, Ramankutty Bhagavathar, K.R.Kumaraswamy, Chemmangudi Srinivasaiyer, Chembai Vaidyanahtha Bhagavathar, and Pallavi Narasimha Achariya. He nurtured his native talents with discipline, dedication and determination.

At the St. Sebastian's High School, Pallurthi, Kochi, Yesudas was the top singer for several consecutive years in 1957; he stood first in the school state level youth festival in Carnatic vocal. In 1958, he was the recipient of gold medal in vocal singing at the all Kerala Catholic Youth Festival held at Ernakulam.

After School, Yesudas joined R.L.V. Music Academy, Tripunithura near Cochin for the Ganabhooshanam course, which he completed with a double promotion and distinction in 1960. Meanwhile, the young singer joined the Sree Swathithirunal Music Academy, Trivandrum, for higher studies. But he could not complete the course due to financial problems at home.

On 14th November 1961 Yesudas recorded his voice for a film for the first time. It was a verse written by Sri Narayana Guru, the sage of the backward classes of Kerala. " Jaathi Betham Mathadwesham Ethumillatha Sarvarum Sotharathwena Vazhunna Mathruka Sthaanamaanithu." The lyrics of the simple song conveyed a great meaning. It read: This is a model place where all the people live like brothers and sisters unaffected by the difference of caste and the enmities of religion". Truly a message in national integration . For Yesudas, for Kerala and for India, it was an auspicious day and an auspicious beginning.

He got the first break in his music career with the hit Malayalam film named Bharya ( music by G. Devarajan and lyrics by Vayalar Ramaverma). In 1967, he sang hit songs in the composition of M.S.Baburaj for the film Udhyogastha directed by P. Venu. He sang in Tamil for Bommai first (music: S. Balachander), but the first released movie was Konjum Kumari (Music : Veda).

The trio of Salil, Yesudas and Prem Nazir (the evergreen hero of Malayalam Cinema) took the Malayalam Cinema Industry of the 1970s by storm. It was generally agreed that Yesudas's voice was the most suited one for Prem Nazir.

In 1970 he was nominated to head the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy and was the youngest person ever to occupy the post.

In 1968, he was invited by the Soviet Government to perform as a cultural delegate in various parts of U.S.S.R. While in Russia, he sang a Russian song over Radio Kazakhstan, which was widely appreciated by local fans.

He's one of the few Indian Artists to have performed at the Royal Albert Hall, London; and the Sydney Opera House, Sydney, respectively in 2001 and 2006.

In 1965 when China attacked India and a war broke out he sung in various centers to raise funds for the war efforts. Again in 1971, when the war over Bangladesh broke out, he took to the streets in an open truck and traveled the entire length and breath of Kerala collecting funds to help the nation, to tide over the crises. A large sum of money was thus collected. Yesudas later presented the money to Mrs.Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister at a special function in New Delhi. Mrs. Indira Gandhi congratulated and thanked the singer for taking the message of India's integrity and national pride to the people on the street through the medium of his singing and for bringing the sentiments of the people of Kerala to the capital in the form of their collective contribution towards war-chest, and at a time when the media such as television and radio were not as big as it is now.

By the 1970s Yesudas entered Bollywood. The first Hindi song he sang was for the movie Jai Jawan Jai Kissan (1971), but the first released movie was Chhoti Si Baat. He has sung Hindi songs for many leading actors in Hindi cinema including Amitabh Bachchan, Amol Palekar and Jeetendra. He has sung many evergreen Hindi film songs for music directors including Ravindra Jain, Bappi Lahiri, Khayyam, Rajkamal and Salil Chowdhury.

Yesudas's most popular Hindi songs are in the 1976 movie Chitchor, with music given by Ravindra Jain. The greatest tribute to Yesudas was paid by Ravindra Jain, in an interview wherein the blind music director confessed that if ever he happened to regain vision, the first person he would like to see would be Yesudas.

Yesudas has performed in many major cities around the world. In 1965, he was invited by the Soviet Union government to perform at music concerts in various cities in the USSR and also sang a Russian song over Radio Kazakhstan. Yesudas became one of the senate members in the International Parliament for Safety and Peace. On 14 November 1999, Yesudas was presented with an honorary award by UNESCO for "Outstanding Achievements in Music and Peace" at the "Music for Peace" event in Paris.a concert held to mark the dawn of the new millennium and whose attendees included artistes such as Lionel Richie, Ray Charles, Montserrat Caballé, and Zubin Mehta.

In 1971, during the Indo-Pakistani War, Yesudas travelled all around Kerala with his musical troupe to raise funds for the Indian prime minister's National Defense Fund.

In 2001 he sang for album Ahimsa in Sanskrit, Latin and English and in a mix of styles including new-age and Carnatic. In his music concerts in the Middle East he sings Arabic songs in the Carnatic style. He frequently serves as a cultural ambassador for India through his performances abroad, promoting Indian music.

In 2009 Yesudas began a cross-country musical campaign against terrorism in Thiruvananthapuram, with the motto 'Music For Peace'. Kavita Karkare, wife of Hemant Karkare, handed over the torch to Yesudas to mark the launch of the 'Shanthi Sangeetha Yatra'.

In 1980 Yesudas established the Tharangani Studio at Trivandrum. In 1992 the office and studio were moved to Chennai, Tamil Nadu and the company was incorporated in the US in 1998. Tharangni Studio and Tharangni Records became a recording center in Kerala which, for the first time, brought out audio cassettes of Malayalam film songs in Stereo. The record company also had a voice mixing studio in Studio27, Chennai. The studio continues to produce and present events of Yesudas both for film and Indian classical music concerts throughout the world.

Yesudas is married to Prabha. They have three sons, Vinod, Vijay and Vishal. Their second son Vijay Yesudas is a musician who won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2007 and 2013. The family is currently settled in Chennai and Trivandrum. He also owns estates in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA and Flower Mound, Texas, USA for personal and business reasons.

He has recorded more than 70,000 songs in many languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Oriya, Marathi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tulu, Malay, Russian, Arabic, Latin and English during a career spanning five decades.

Yesudas has won the National Award for the Best Male Playback Singer Seven times (the most by any Indian singer), 5 Filmfare Awards and the State Award for the Best Playback Singer 43 times, which consists of awards by the State Governments of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and West Bengal. He was awarded the Padma Sri in 1975 and the Padma Bhushan in 2002 by the Government of India for his contributions towards the arts. In 2011 Yesudas was honoured with the CNN-IBN outstanding achievement award having recorded over 50,000 songs in a five-decade career. In 2006, he sang 16 film songs in four South Indian languages on the same day at AVM Studio, Chennai.
